The initiative for the formation of the Society was taken by Mr. A.S. Muslim whose eldest son was born with Down’s Syndrome. Finding no facility in the country for the Education and Training of mentally challenged children, Mr. Muslim made a general appeal through newspapers for advice and assistance. He received an overwhelming response from other parents in the same situation. To address this problem, SCINOSA was formed, with membership consisting of parents of special children and well wishers. The objective of the Society was to create a forum for educating and training of children with various forms of retardation, to help them become self sufficient and useful members of society. SCINOSA was formally registered on 10th August, 1960.
Society for Children In Need Of Special Attention or SCINOSA was founded in 1960 and the first governing body was elected on 11th February, by Mr.A.S.Muslim. Mr. Muslim had just been a parent whose first-born son had Down’s syndrome. In the late 1950s in Pakistan, he searched in vain for a qualified person who could guide him in finding ways to help his son. In desperation, he finally wrote a letter in a newspaper urging parent, doctors just anybody who had some knowledge about mental retardation to come forward to ease his plight.
For some time the new Society was unsuccessful in its efforts to implement its stated objectives. No guidance or help was available as work has been done in this regard in the country. Thus, no worthwhile programme could be undertaken for about 2 years. The Society could collect only about Rs.1,500/- as total capital during this period.
The Society is managed by an elected Governing Body from within its members. Elected every three years the present governing Body comprises the following:
